Why I Tried OpenClaw And Why I Quit

When the Cards Are Dealt by a MachineTrust, Intuition, and the Irreplaceable Weight of Human Presence in Spiritual Guidance.

Introduction

This report is based on in-depth interviews with 4 North American divination enthusiasts. Respondents came from different regions in Canada and the United States, aged 31-44, all female users with experience paying for divination services. Through systematic analysis of respondent backgrounds, current payment behaviors, service experience evaluations, attitudes toward AI divination, and willingness-to-pay differences, this study aims to answer one core question: Can AI divination capture paying users from traditional divination services?

Summary

  • The core driver for users paying for human divination is emotional connection and interpersonal interaction, a need especially prominent in high-stakes decision scenarios that AI divination cannot fully replace.

  • Respondents generally believe AI divination should be priced significantly lower than human services (approximately 30%-70% of human pricing), and is better suited for daily, low-risk divination needs.

  • Trust building is the biggest barrier to AI divination — users need to verify accuracy through actual use, and an inaccurate first experience will directly cause users to abandon the service.

  • Convenience and instant response are AI divination's core competitive advantages, attractive for time-pressed or geographically constrained scenarios.

  • User acceptance of AI divination shows significant individual variation — from "supplementary use only" to "complete replacement of human services," depending on the individual's need for interpersonal connection and trust in AI technology.

Findings

Respondent Profiles: Divination Enthusiasts Show Diverse Life Circumstances and Participation Motivations

The respondent group displayed diverse personal backgrounds and divination participation patterns. They varied in profession, income level, and life circumstances, but all maintained interest in astrology, tarot cards, and similar metaphysical practices. Participants ranged from active users who consult regularly to light users who pay occasionally, with varying degrees of interest and depth of understanding.

  • Respondents' life circumstances and professional backgrounds showed diversity — including doctoral students, full-time workers, entrepreneurs, and other identities; in single, dating, or married stages of life. These background factors influenced when and what types of divination services they sought.

"I would then probably consider trusting AI."

— Kavya AK

"I would still want the human connection even if AI was just as good."

— Kavya AK

  • Most respondents demonstrated interest in astrology, birth charts, tarot cards, and other divination forms, with varying levels of knowledge or practical experience. This interest forms the foundation for their paid service usage.

"If it satisfies my brain and if I'm happy to hear what they are talking about and if I can figure it out or find its relevance to my life, I would say it is accurate."

— DIPTII BHATIA

"Maybe it's something about astrology because I believe in it. That's why I find them accurate."

— DIPTII BHATIA

  • Beyond divination, respondents had other hobbies and areas of interest. Divination services play a specific rather than all-encompassing role in their lives, influencing their level of engagement and willingness to pay.

"Um, on a given month, it depends on bills, how busy I am, you know, if I'm focusing on other things. I look at that as a luxury, not a need. So, you know, that's really something that I'm doing in addition to. It's not something that I need to have. Did you get my answer?"

— Destinee Ashford

"Yes, I got it – it's a luxury, depends on your budget and what else is going on. That makes total sense. Destinee, this has been incredibly helpful. Thank you so much for sharing all of this with me today – your insights about the human element, the environmental piece, how you'd use AI differently than real readers – all of it is really valuable. I really appreciate your time!"

— Destinee Ashford

Current Payment Behavior: Users Show Significant Differences in Usage Frequency, Service Types, and Spending Amounts

Respondents displayed notable individual differences in their paid divination service usage patterns. Service types ranged from traditional in-person astrologer consultations to paid astrology apps, with usage frequency varying from monthly to once every few months. These behavioral patterns are influenced by personal needs, financial capacity, and perceptions of service value.

  • Usage frequency varies significantly across users — some seek divination services monthly, others only consult every few months, depending on life decisions they face and personal habits.

"I think I would use my human readers the same. So, like, four to four to six times a year. And then maybe just use the AI one in between, like I said, when I'm on the go or you know, just for some reason can't get to a human reader."

— Jaclyn Parker

"It would be something I use in addition to humans."

— Kavya AK

  • Trigger scenarios for seeking divination services are typically tied to important life decisions — career development, romantic relationships, major purchases, and other moments requiring guidance are the primary motivations for paid consultations.

"I would say AI would be better for, like, an everyday prediction because based on your sun sign, you have those you know, predictions or, you know, readings, basically. I think that way AI would be better. I wouldn't really resort to a human astrologer. But for specific questions about my career growth, like, follow-up questions, I think a human is much better."

— Kavya AK

"I will use AI over a real person when I have when I have to choose or know about which business should I buy? And should it be relevant to my life or would it be profit bearing? So AI is not going to tell me only yes or no thing. Maybe it can get more information in general aspects."

— DIPTII BHATIA

  • Respondents' annual spending on divination services ranged from hundreds to thousands (in rupees or dollars), with single session fees ranging from $$20 to$$150, reflecting different financial capacities and value assessments.

"Probably forty or fifty dollars."

— Jaclyn Parker

"Fifty dollars would be too much for me."

— DIPTII BHATIA

  • When choosing paid services, users primarily consider the practitioner's qualifications, price reasonableness, service response speed, and reviews from others — these decision criteria help them navigate among numerous services.

"I think price matters, availability matters. Response time matters, reviews matter. How much data is this using on my phone matters. Is this AI divination impacting the environment and in that capacity that also matters?"

— Destinee Ashford

"I would not call it a red flag, but if they are charging too much, I won't go for it."

— DIPTII BHATIA

Service Experience Evaluation: Emotional Connection and Interpersonal Interaction Are the Core Value of Human Divination

Respondents' evaluations of existing paid divination services centrally reflect the importance of interpersonal connection. What they gain from these services goes beyond the divination results themselves to include emotional support, the feeling of being understood, and the experience of deep exchange. These intangible values form the core reason users are willing to pay for human services.

  • Interpersonal connection and emotional support are the service values almost all respondents value most — the ability to build emotional resonance with a divination practitioner, to feel empathy and be understood. This humanized interactive experience is repeatedly emphasized as the unique advantage of human services.

"I would still want the human connection even if AI was just as good."

— Kavya AK

"I think that human presence, that human intuition, and that human connection."

— Jaclyn Parker

"Again, I just don't see myself not wanting that human connection that human I do longer tarot sessions, and that connection is really important to me."

— Jaclyn Parker

"Because I value, really, that human presence, that connection, that connection, being able to go in person. Um, so, yeah,"

— Jaclyn Parker

  • Users highly value the ability to have two-way dialogue with practitioners — the interactive process of asking follow-up questions, clarifying doubts, and having in-depth discussions allows them to test the practitioner's credibility and receive more personalized guidance.

"that they're giving me accurate information so I'm not giving them everything at once. But I do think it's an opportunity for me to have a more fluid conversation."

— Destinee Ashford

"So with a real person, you can go back and forth, test their credibility, see if they pick up on things. With AI, it's more straightforward – you ask, it answers, done?"

— Destinee Ashford

  • Accuracy and relevance are also viewed as key elements — divination results need to resonate with users' actual life situations, able to explain or predict what they are experiencing. This sense of "accuracy" is often connected to personal belief systems.

"If it satisfies my brain and if I'm happy to hear what they are talking about and if I can figure it out or find its relevance to my life, I would say it is accurate."

— DIPTII BHATIA

"Would say, really, they are all important equally important. Like, you want it to be accurate, but also you need that human connection. So would almost split those two in half."

— Jaclyn Parker

  • Some users mentioned that dissatisfaction with existing services mainly focuses on practical operational issues such as high prices, time constraints, and booking inconvenience, rather than the quality of the service content itself.

"No. There was no judgment or opinions from them, but, yes, at that point of time, there was no AI, so we had no choices. We had to reach out to human beings. We had to book appointments, travel, all the way. But, uh, these days, there's no need. I can just sit at my home and get everything done on my computer in just one click. So I think that's more meaningful and time saving."

— DIPTII BHATIA

"Ah, so it's not that Sanjay was judgmental - it's that AI is just more convenient. No appointments, no travel, instant results. Time is really valuable to you - you mentioned being too busy for AstroTalk's daily restrictions. So speed and convenience are big factors in why you'd choose AI?"

— DIPTII BHATIA

Perceptions and Attitudes Toward AI Divination: Users Show Significant Concerns About Trust and Acceptance

Respondents' attitudes toward AI divination displayed cautious and exploratory characteristics. While some users acknowledge AI technology's performance in other domains, in the spiritual and emotional realm of divination, they generally have trust barriers. Perceptions of differences between AI and human divination mainly focus on emotional connection, intuitive ability, and humanized understanding.

  • Respondents' core concern about AI divination is the lack of humanity and emotional connection — nearly all users expressed worry about AI's inability to provide human intuition, energy perception, and emotional resonance, which they consider indispensable elements of the divination experience.

"I think it is intuition and just, like I said, human presence."

— Jaclyn Parker

"Again, just having that presence, having that energy, and really having that intuition, and I don't think that's something that AI can replicate."

— Jaclyn Parker

"you know, I just feel like if it's paid, it needs to come from a person, not from from technology."

— Destinee Ashford

  • Trust building requires validation through actual accuracy — multiple respondents stated that if AI divination could prove its accuracy, they would be willing to gradually build trust, but the success or failure of the first experience is crucial.

"I would then probably consider trusting AI."

— Kavya AK

"I think it would change my trust over time, but I don't know if it would fully replace a human."

— Jaclyn Parker

"I would probably write off AI readings altogether."

— Jaclyn Parker

  • Users believe the greatest difference between AI and human divination lies in the absence of intuition, spiritual connection, and human presence — these are considered core elements of divination practice, while AI is viewed as a tool that can only process data and information.

"I think it is intuition and just, like I said, human presence."

— Jaclyn Parker

"That human element in spiritual things — is that about intuition, or something else that humans bring that you don't think a machine could have?"

— Jaclyn Parker

  • Some users hold a relatively open attitude toward AI divination, believing that as long as results are accurate and meet personal needs, it doesn't matter whether the service provider is human or machine. This pragmatic attitude focuses more on outcomes than process.

"Results are what matter - accuracy and relevance, not who or what generated it. That's really clear. Now I'm curious - when you think about accuracy in divination, how do you actually judge if something is accurate? Like with AstroTalk, you said it was accurate but you were too busy to follow the advice. How did you know it was accurate?"

— DIPTII BHATIA

"Because AI is ruling these days, and I know accuracy of AI is pretty standard, and, uh, we should respect that."

— DIPTII BHATIA

  • Concerns about AI divination also include practical issues like privacy protection and data usage — users want assurance of personal information confidentiality and proper usage standards.

"Right. As long as there's some clause about confidentiality and sharing my information."

— Destinee Ashford

"I think it would depend on if it knew it already. Because if it knew it I think I don't know if that would I think that might make me uncomfortable."

— Destinee Ashford

Value Comparison of AI vs. Human Divination: Users View AI as a Low-Cost Supplement Rather Than a Complete Replacement

Respondents' value positioning of AI and human divination shows a clear hierarchical differentiation. Most users view AI divination as an economical choice for handling low-risk, everyday questions, while reserving human divination for important decisions and deep needs. Differences in pricing sensitivity and usage scenarios reflect the distinct positions of the two services in users' mental models.

  • Price expectations show a significant gap — respondents generally believe AI divination should be priced at approximately 30%-70% of human services, citing the lack of human labor and emotional value. The price ceiling is mostly in the $20-40 range.

"Probably twenty rupees."

— Kavya AK

"I think maybe, like, fifteen or twenty dollars."

— Jaclyn Parker

"I would I would say it would need to be a third of the price. I don't think that it's I don't think that it's accurate enough."

— Destinee Ashford

"Thirty five dollars per month."

— DIPTII BHATIA

  • Most users would choose AI divination in specific scenarios — mainly including traveling, everyday questions, and quick consultation needs in low-risk situations, where convenience and instant response are key drivers.

"I think maybe if I wasn't in town or I was on the go or I'm I travel sometimes. Um, so if I was traveling, that could be useful."

— Jaclyn Parker

"I'm not gonna go to an in person reading with a reader in the town I currently live in. If I'm not in town. Um, so being able to do a reading on the go would be helpful."

— Jaclyn Parker

"I would say AI would be better for, like, an everyday prediction because based on your sun sign, you have those you know, predictions or, you know, readings, basically. I think that way AI would be better. I wouldn't really resort to a human astrologer. But for specific questions about my career growth, like, follow-up questions, I think a human is much better."

— Kavya AK

  • For high-risk or emotionally charged questions, users insist on human services — major career decisions, emotional issues, and complex situations requiring deep discussion represent scenarios where interpersonal connection is irreplaceable.

— Kavya AK

"Goes back to the human element. I wanna be able to speak. It's like going to the doctor. I don't want to speak to technology about personal things or things that I may have going on. I wanted to speak to someone live. There are certain scenarios where a live person needs to be present. Or needs to be offered, I don't I mean, I think that there are scenarios, of course, where, hey. Is it more convenient? Is it quicker? Is it least expensive? But for me, if there's a preference to have live connection, it's likely I'm gonna use that. But I do think maybe day to day, maybe something quick, maybe not a full reading, then I could see myself using ChatGPT or, excuse me, this AI divination for some quick or not as expensive as a full reading."

— Destinee Ashford

"I would spend equal amount if both are accurate, but again, like, for most critical decisions and most serious scenarios in my life, I would prefer a human because of that connection."

— Kavya AK

  • Most users position AI divination as a supplementary service rather than a replacement — they plan to continue using human services for core needs, only leveraging AI as an auxiliary tool in specific situations.

"It would be something I use in addition to humans."

— Kavya AK

"Definitely more of a supplement."

— Jaclyn Parker

"I think the people I think there's still gonna always be a lane for readings. People doing readings. I don't think AI is gonna replace those people because that's their business and their brand. I think AI would just be its own lane."

— Destinee Ashford

  • Notably, some individual users expressed willingness to completely replace human services with AI — these users prioritize result accuracy, convenience, and the non-judgmental nature, with lower needs for interpersonal connection.

"No. I would completely replace human astrologers with AI. If it can provide me best services within the price range I have just mentioned."

— DIPTII BHATIA

"After talking after discussing about AI, I think AI would not judge me. That's the most important thing. I can tell them, and then AI can come back with the relevant answers. Whereas if I am meeting any human being, they may judge. May give their own advice. If I don't want to believe or if I don't want to follow what they are telling me."

— DIPTII BHATIA

"Yes. You're right. Yes. You are right."

— DIPTII BHATIA

  • In willingness-to-pay comparisons, users' willingness to pay for human services is significantly higher than for AI services — even if AI accuracy is comparable, the value of interpersonal connection still makes users willing to pay premium prices for human services.

"I would pay more for human reading."

— Jaclyn Parker

"That makes total sense given everything you've shared. Why would you pay more for the human reading?"

— Jaclyn Parker

"I would go with a human."

— Kavya AK
